history

Share over 500 francs in the non-alcoholic wines & canning factory Meilen AG on April 13, 1917

On June 13, 1896, the “First Swiss Stock Company for the Production of Unfermented and Alcohol-Free Grape and Fruit Wines” was founded in Bern with share capital of CHF 250,000 . Their goal was the production of unfermented grape and fruit juices on a large scale using the "Wädenswil process" developed by Hermann Müller-Thurgau . The first factory was built in the same year on Laupenstrasse in Bern. In 1899 the company changed its name to “Society for the production of alcohol-free wines”, whereby the term “alcohol-free wines” was a common description for must at the time. She then had a new factory built on Lake Zurich near the Meilen train station . After canning production had also started in 1916/17 , the company name was changed to "Alcohol-free wines & canning factory AG, Meilen".

In 1928 the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. Gottlieb Duttweiler , the founder of Migros , acquired a creditor position of 400,000 francs from the Schweizerische Kreditanstalt for 50,000 francs and thus became the main creditor of the company, whose majority of the shares were transferred to Migros in the estate process. The takeover was due to the fact that Migros had to manufacture its own brands in order to circumvent the rigorous boycotts of branded goods manufacturers and their associations. The previous customers were not up to the pressure of the associations, which is why Miros was the sole buyer of the products. Duttweiler further significantly reduced the production of sweet cider and reduced the price to almost half, whereupon the competitors had to follow suit. The former niche product developed into a popular drink in a short time.

At Duttweiler's suggestion, on October 30, 1929, the company was renamed "Produktion AG" Meilen (PAG). The PAG soon gave up the production of sweet cider in order to gain space for the production of other products. Biscuit production started in 1930, and yoghurt production began a year later . The production of cooking oil and cooking fat, also started in 1930, was relocated to Basel in 1934 . From 1935, the PAG provided the carnival biscuits that are still sold today and are only available during the carnival period each year. In 1942, PAG integrated the production of chocolate previously carried out by Jonatal AG (now Jowa ), but gave it to Chocolat Frey, which is also part of Migros, in 1955 (together with confectionery and sugar confectionery production) .

In 1949, PAG began producing ice cream products, in 1969 it took over the Jowa waffle factory and in 1974 powder production for creams and baking powder started. After the ice cream production was expanded in 1983, the company entered the export business two years later. In 1996 PAG was renamed Midor AG, in 2009 it transferred the aperitif nuts division to Delica . In 2016, Midor undertook a strategic realignment.
