The Miflaga Liberalit Jisra'elit ( Hebrew מפלגה ליברלית ישראלית, Israeli Liberal Party ) was a liberal party in Israel that existed from 1961 to 1988. It belonged to the center-right alliances Gachal and Likud and eventually merged into the latter. Its chairmen were Peretz Bernstein , Elimelech Rimalt and Simcha Ehrlich .

history

The party was formed on May 8, 1961 through a merger of the General Zionists and the Progressive Party , giving the party 14 Knesset seats . In the Israeli parliamentary elections in 1961 , the party received 13.6 percent of the vote and 17 seats, as many as the revisionist Zionist party Cherut von Menachem Begin .

On May 25, 1965, she joined forces with Cherut to form the center-right alliance Gachal (Block Cherut and Liberals). The progressives rejected this union, however, seven MPs left the party and founded the Libralim Atzma'im (Independent Liberals). The Miflaga Liberalit Jisra'elit and Cherut ran for the following elections together and formed a common faction, but the two parties remained. In 1973 the Gachal was expanded to include other right-wing parties to form Likud , which won the election in 1977. The Liberal Party ceased to exist in 1988 when Likud became a unified party.
