Migdol ( Hebrew migdāl for tower ; ancient Egyptian Mekter ) is the West Semitic name of fortification towers or small fortifications. In ancient Egypt, most of the fortifications built near the border were called Mekter . In addition, a Migdol or Mekter also functioned as a border checkpoint for travelers, traders, wandering nomads and messengers.
