Miguel Miramón

Miguel Miramón (born September 29, 1832 in Mexico City , † June 19, 1867 in Santiago de Querétaro ) was a Mexican general and politician.

Miramón served with distinction in the American-Mexican War in 1847 and became a general in 1858. As such, he brought about the overthrow of President Comonfort .

With the help of the clerical party, Miramón was elected president on January 2, 1859, but defeated on December 22, 1860 near Calpulalpam by the Liberals under Ortega and then had to give way to Juárez and flee abroad.

In 1862 he attempted a landing with the French , but was rejected by them and sent back to Europe, where he lived until 1866. When he expected the resignation of Emperor Maximilian , he made himself available and returned to Mexico. In February 1867 he was given command of the entire infantry of the 9,000-strong army . At the beginning of March the siege of the city of Querétaro began by General Mariano Escobedo , who succeeded in taking the city on May 15th through the betrayal of Colonel Miguel Lopez.
