Mariano Antonio Guadalupe Escobedo de la Peña (born January 16, 1826 in San Pablo de los Labradores , Nuevo León , † May 22, 1902 in Mexico City ) was a general in the Mexican army and governor of Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí .

Life

Mariano Escobedo was born on January 16, 1826 in San Pablo de los Labradores (now Galeana ), Nuevo León. He was the youngest of six children from Manuel Escobedo and Rita de la Peña. He began his career in the Mexican armed forces. In 1854 he defended Ayutla's liberal plan to end the dictatorship of Antonio López de Santa Anna .

On May 5, 1862 he took part in the Battle of Puebla (Cinco de Mayo) in Puebla , where he was promoted to colonel of the cavalry thanks to his bravery. He was later promoted to general and organized an army corps that fought against the French invading forces during the French intervention in Mexico , defeated them and captured the Emperor Maximilian I , who was appointed by the French, in Querétaro in 1867 .

During the presidency of Benito Juárez (1858–1872) Mariano Escobedo was appointed commander in chief of the northern zone and after the restoration of the Mexican republic he was governor of several states and in 1875 military secretary and president of the Supreme Military Court.

During the presidency of Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada (1872–1876), with whom he was close friends, he was appointed Senator and Minister of War (1876). In 1877 he fought against Porfirio Díaz , who in turn overthrew Lerdo de Tejada and established a dictatorship.

With the arrival of General Porfirio Diaz in the presidency, he was exiled to the United States , from where he organized an uprising against the dictator. For this reason he was captured (1878). Escobedo died in Mexico on May 22, 1902.
