Mike Portelly

Mike Portelly (* 1952 ; † around July 5, 2007 ) was a British underwater photographer , cameraman and film director .

Since the mid-1970s Portelly, who studied dentistry , worked as a photographer. His recordings from Kenya in particular became known. Portelly made his first documentary film during a dental operation in 1976 .

As early as 1976, he was awarded gold, silver and bronze medals as well as the prize for the young artist at the Brighton International Film Festival . In 1979 he won the Tilbrook Trophy for best portfolio in Brighton . Together with Derek Berwin he won the World Championship in underwater photography in Sicily for Great Britain . Since then he has received numerous other awards for his underwater photography and later also for films, including an award from the Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques (CMAS) .

The Ocean's Daughter was his first feature film; He was on the 1983 Brighton Festival premiere . He was a member of The British Society of Underwater Photographers (BSoUP) . Mike Portelly died of cancer that was diagnosed in 2000.
