Michael "Mike" Scott (born December 14, 1958 in Edinburgh , Scotland ) is a Scottish singer , guitarist and pianist . It is a founding member and songwriter of the Scottish-Irish folk rock band The Waterboys . With Bring 'em All In (1995) and Still Burning (1997) he has also produced two solo albums .

Scott's musician career began in the 1970s in school bands and in the band he founded, Karma . In 1977 he began studying English literature and philosophy at the University of Edinburgh , which he dropped out after a year. Later, influences from William Butler Yeats and Robert Burns should be found in his lyrics for the Waterboys.

Scott founded the band The Bootlegs with guitarist Allan McConnell , which in 1978 became Another Pretty Face with other members . With their own record label , the band released a few singles . The first release, All the Boys Love Carrie , was named "Single of the Week" by the New Musical Express . The band signed to Virgin Records and toured with Stiff Little Fingers . The record contract was canceled after the band had submitted a demo recording . This was followed in 1981 with a contract with Ensign Records combined with a move to London and the renaming in Funhouse . In the following time Scott concentrated more on his own songs and recordings, which eventually led to the founding of the Waterboys . A session at Redshop Studios in December 1981 was the beginning of the first Waterboys album, which was released in 1983.

Scott is a second married and lives in Findhorn , Scotland - see Findhorn Foundation .
