Mike Smith (athlete)
Mike Smith (actually Michael Cameron Smith ; born September 16, 1967 in Kenora , Ontario ) is a Canadian decathlete .
Although Smith had 25 decathlons in his career with a score of 8,000 or more, he never got a big win. He was always overshadowed by Dan O'Brien , arguably the best decathlete of the 1990s. He achieved his greatest success at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in 1991 , where he was runner- up behind O'Brien and ahead of the German Christian Schenk with a performance of 8549 points.
At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, he was the flag bearer of Canada at the opening ceremony. He had to give up the Olympic competition after the first day of competition due to injury. In 1995 he was once again a bronze medalist at the World Championships in Gothenburg .
