Mikel Irujo Amezaga

Mikel Irujo Amezaga (born October 6, 1972 in Caracas , Venezuela ) is a Spanish politician of the Basque nationalist party Eusko Alkartasuna (EA), whose board of directors in the Navarra region he belongs to. From 2007 to 2009 he was a member of the European Parliament .

Professional career

Irujo studied law at the Universidad de Navarra and completed a postgraduate degree in business administration. He also received a doctorate in law from the National Distance University of Spain and diplomas from both the Distance University and the Free University of Brussels in the specialty of European law . He has published various legal studies on the European Union and the Basque Country Autonomous Region , including Euskal Herria en la Unión Europea (Eusko Alkartasuna, 2001).

Since June 1996 he has been working as an analyst for EU legislation and responsible for the compilation of European legal acts at a legal publisher.

Political career

Since 1991 Irujo has belonged to the youth organization of the social democratic Basque nationalist party Eusko Alkartasuna (EA), which is part of the European party alliance European Free Alliance (EFA). From 1999 to 2003 he was a member of the European Parliament and from 2000 to 2002 he was also the first president of the newly founded EFA youth organization EFA-Youth .

In the 2004 European elections he was number 2 behind Bernat Joan i Marí ( ERC ) on the Europa de los Pueblos ("Europe of the Peoples") electoral list , which included various left-wing nationalist regional parties. Since the list could only reach one seat, Irujo initially did not move into the European Parliament . According to an agreement between the member parties of the electoral list, Joan i Marí resigned from his mandate halfway through the legislative period in June 2007, so that Irujo moved in as a successor in the European Parliament. There he belonged to the Greens / EFA group and was a member of the Committee on Culture and Education . Irujo did not run again for the European elections in Spain in 2009 .

At a party congress in December 2007, he was elected Secretary for Communication of Eusko Alkartasuna.
