Mikhail Lukin

Mikhail D. Lukin (Михаи́л Дми́триевич Луки́н, Michail Dmitrijewitsch Lukin; born October 10, 1971 in Moscow ) is a Russian - American physicist at Harvard University .

Lukin is considered a pioneer in the field of the application of quantum optics for purposes of quantum computing . His theoretical and experimental work led to new methods of (a) controlling the propagation of light fields and (b) manipulating individual atoms by shaping the interaction of light and matter at the single-particle quantum level. He realized atomic coherence effects in optics, including lasers without population inversion , resonance enhancement of the refractive index and non-linear processes and spectroscopy of the coherence media.

Mikhail Lukin studied physics and applied mathematics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology . He earned a Ph.D. in 1998 from Texas A&M University with a thesis on Quantum Coherence and Interference in Optics and Laser Spectroscopy. and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics at Harvard University until 2001 . He then received a first professorship (assistant professor) and in 2004 a full professorship for physics. In 2009 he was offered an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics .

In 2001 Lukin took part in the 22nd Solvay Conference entitled The Physics of Communication . It has (as of June 2018) an h-index of 125.
