MikroTik is a Latvian company that manufactures network hardware and the proprietary RouterOS operating system. The product range extends from devices for home use to SoHo routers to devices for large companies such as access points , core routers , switches and radio relay solutions. In 2019 the company had 280 employees.

RouterOS

MikroTik's core product is RouterOS, an operating system based on the Linux 3.3.5 kernel . It is preinstalled on the MikroTik hardware by default. It is also possible to install RouterOS on ordinary computers ( x86 platform ) and use them as a router.

RouterOS is offered in different license levels. These currently range from level 0 ("demo") to level 6 ("controller"). The levels differ both in price and the respective feature set. For example, RouterOS devices with license level 3 can serve as Wi-Fi - CPE , but not as access points that require at least license level 4.

Functions

RouterOS supports all common functions, also known from other large network equipment providers:

RouterBOARD

RouterBOARD RB493G

In addition to RouterOS and classic network hardware such as routers, switches and access points, MikroTik also manufactures hardware that is sold without a housing and under the name RouterBOARD for installation in your own installations.

Vulnerabilities

In December 2018 it became known that the CIA documents published as Vault 7 on Wikileaks in 2017 also contained vulnerabilities for MikroTik and that these were exploited by strangers for crypto mining . MikroTik published version 6.42.7 of RouterOS in August 2018, in which the security holes were closed, but the update had to be initiated manually by the user.

Operation with free firmware

The Open Source - firmware OpenWRT supports a wide variety of MikroTik equipment, including router boards, access points and directional antennas.
