Mile Mrkšić ( Cyrillic  Миле Мркшић , born July 20, 1947 in Kozarac zu Vrginmost , SR Croatia , Yugoslavia ; † August 16, 2015 in Lisbon , Portugal ) was a general of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and convicted war criminal .

Life

Mile Mrkšić was a colonel in the JNA at the beginning of the Croatian War and as such a commander of the "Motorized Elite Guard Brigade". He was also the leader of the unit responsible for the 1991 attack on Vukovar . After the fall of Vukovar he was promoted to general of the JNA and later leader of the army of the internationally unrecognized Republic of Serbian Krajina .

Mrkšić surrendered to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on May 15, 2002 and was transferred to the court in The Hague on the same day .

On September 27, 2007 Mrkšić was sentenced to twenty years imprisonment for his co-responsibility for the Vukovar massacre . He was found guilty of aiding and abetting the murder and torture of prisoners of war: as chief responsible and commander in chief, he had left the prisoners of the hospital in Vukovar to the members of the Serbian paramilitary units and withdrew from the conquered areas into the combat zone, thereby accepting the following massacre taken. The charge of crimes against humanity was dropped, especially since the victims were identified or suspected members of Croatian units. The Serbian units that mistreated and killed the victims assumed that these were prisoners of war and not civilians.
