The military biscuit ( French biscuits militaires , Italian biscotti militari , Rhaeto-Romanic biscuits militars ) is a food component of the Swiss Army .

history

Oscar J. Kambly, the second generation owner of Kambly SA , developed the recipe for the tasteless pastry in 1959. It was supposed to replace the military zwieback known as the Bundesziegel and to taste the soldiers with cheese, sausage and chocolate. It should also be durable for at least three years.

The army has been distributing around one million servings to soldiers annually since 1959. The military biscuits are also popular with the civilian population.

More and more private individuals traded with the military biscuits, which the VBS wanted to prevent first because the trade in army provisions is prohibited. This is also noted on the packaging. But since 2010 Kambly, still a manufacturer of military biscuits, has been able to sell them to major distributors. The packaging must differ from that of the military biscuits produced for the military.

Since 2009, the military biscuits have been distributed along with the military chocolate in a gift box with a dedication by the chief of the army to soldiers who have completed their military service. 25,000 such gift boxes are included in the recurring annual production for a year-round layoff across Switzerland.
