description

Old Milton-Madison Bridge as seen from Milton

This two-lane vehicle bridge crosses the Ohio River on US Highway 421 . The main span of the 971 m long structure measures 183 m. The width of the bridge at the level of the road is 6.1 m, the clear passage height for vehicles is 5.1 m. The structure is the only vehicle bridge on the Ohio River within 42 km upstream (the Markland Bridge at Vevay ) and 51 km downstream (the Lewis and Clark Bridge in Louisville).

This bridge is on the shortest route between Indianapolis and Lexington , Kentucky.

history

Construction of the bridge was started in 1928 and 1929 completed the construction costs amounted to 1,365,101.84 dollars . The building was opened to traffic on December 20, 1929. Until November 1, 1947, a toll was levied for use .

The bridge was renewed in 1997 after a 1995 study on the location of a new building came to no conclusion. The renovation work cost ten million US dollars.

New building

The new construction looks similar to the old bridge and cost $ 103 million. The new bridge girders were built from 2011 to 2012 on temporary bridge piers next to the old ones. In June 2013, traffic was diverted to the temporary new bridge. The old bridge was then blown up and demolished by January 2014. In April 2014 the new bridge was pushed back onto the old bridge girders.
