Minazō

Minazō ( Hiragana : み な ぞ う ; Kanji : 美男 象 , German "beautiful, male [elephant seal "; * approx. 1994; † October 4, 2005 ) was an elephant seal that lived in the Shin Enoshima aquarium ( 新 江 ノ 島 水族館 , Shin-Enoshima Suizokukan ) lived in Fujisawa .

Minazō came to Japan from Uruguay in May 1995 , where he quickly became a celebrity. When fully grown, he weighed around 2 tons and was 4½ meters tall. The elephant seal mastered several acts of dressage; two records from the Merzbow sound art project were dedicated to him.

The popular elephant seal died of emphysema on October 4, 2005 . His skeleton is currently on display at Nihon University .
