Emergence

Malik left the boy band One Direction on March 25, 2015 after almost five years because he was no longer happy with the band. On July 29, 2015, Malik signed a recording deal with RCA Records . In the further course of the year Malik gave several interviews in which he talked about his debut album and already revealed the titles of some songs.

The album consists mostly of R&B and some pop songs. The song Intermission: Flower was recorded by Malik in Urdu , suggesting Malik's Pakistani origins. Exactly one year to the day after he left his previous band, Malik released the album on March 25, 2016.

Single releases

With Pillowtalk the first single from the album was released on January 29, 2016th It was number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 5 on the German single charts. Model Gigi Hadid can be seen in the music video for the single, which was released on the same day as the song .

On March 10, 2016, Like I Would was released as the second single on the album. However, this could not build on the previous success of Pillowtalk and reached number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 .
