The Mindanao Tarictic Hornbill ( Penelopides affinis ), also known as Mindanao Tarictic Hornbill , is a species from the hornbill family (Bucerotidae). Its range is limited to some of the Philippine islands.

Appearance

Mindanao hornbills are one of the smaller hornbills. The body length is 45 centimeters.

A sexual dimorphism can be seen in the plumage. The males have yellowish-white plumage on the chest, neck and head. In females, however, these areas are also feathered with black. Unfledged areas on the head are pale blue. In the males, however, the featherless areas around the eyes are beige, the skin on the throat is black. While the male has dark brown legs and feet, the female has black.

Distribution area and habitat

The Mindanao hornbill occurs on the islands of Mindanao , Dinagat , Siargao , and Basilan . The bird inhabits rainforests up to a height of 1000 meters above sea level.

Way of life

Mindanao hornbills can occasionally be seen in pairs or in small groups in fruit-bearing trees. They prefer to stay in the lower area of trees and are often observed at the edges of forests. The birds are loud and make a sound that sounds like "ta-rik-tik" (hence the generic name).

So far nothing is known about courtship behavior. There have also been few observations so far about the breeding habits of this bird species. As is usual with hornbills, the female is walled up by the male in a tree cavity and fed by the latter, while the latter first hatches the eggs and later the young birds. The females molt while they incubate the eggs and are unable to fly during this time.

Systematics

There are two subspecies. P. a. basilanica is native to the island of Basilan , while the nominate form P. a. affinis occurs in Mindanao , Dinagat , and Siargao . Some authors consider the samar hornbill ( Penelopides samarensis ) to be a subspecies of the Mindanao hornbill.
