Mineral de Pozos (also San Pedro de los Pozos ) is a place with approx. 3,000 inhabitants in the area of ​​the approximately 120,000 inhabitants counting municipality (municipio) San Luis de la Paz in the northeast of the Mexican state Guanajuato . Because of its colonial character, the place is one of the Pueblos Mágicos .

Location and climate

The place Mineral de Pozos is located in the sparsely forested mountains in the north of Mexico about 118 km (driving distance) northeast of the city of Guanajuato at an altitude of about 2220  m ; San Luis de la Paz, the main town in the municipality, is only 10 km to the north. The climate is temperate to mild; the sparse rain (approx. 500 mm / year) falls mainly during the summer half-year.

history

The first known inhabitants of the area were various nomadic Indian tribes such as the Chichimeken , the Guachichil or the Pames . After the conquest of Tenochtitlán (1519–1521) by Hernán Cortés , the area remained undisturbed by the Spaniards for a long time; it was not until 1576 that the first Jesuit missionaries came . In 1590, the then Viceroy , Luis de Velasco y Castilla , commissioned the order to subdue the Indians. Only gradually was the rich ore and mineral deposits in the region recognized and their exploitation began; In this context, the place Mineral de Pozos was created, which flourished until the 1880s. After that, the mines were gradually closed and the place fell into disrepair.
