Luis de Velasco y Castilla, marqués de Salinas , also with the addition of the name: el joven , hijo , (German: the younger , the son ) to distinguish it from his father (* 1539 in Carrión de los Condes , Spain ; † 1617 in Seville ) was a Spanish diplomat and officer who served as Viceroy of New Spain and Peru .

Life

Velasco was born in Spain as the son of the future conquistador of the same name, Luis de Velasco . In 1590 he was appointed Viceroy of New Spain. He achieved peace with the Indians; During his tenure fell the founding of the settlements in Jalisco , Guanajuato , Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí .

As Viceroy of Peru (from 1599) he too had to continue the war with the rebellious Mapuche . In 1607 he was again appointed viceroy to Mexico; Sebastián Vizcaíno's expedition , which led to Japan , fell during his second term in office .

After his return to Europe, he received a seat on the Indian Council of the Spanish Crown.
