The Ming Sun class , also known as the Sun type , is a series of eleven container motor ships from the Taiwanese shipping company Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation (Yang Ming Line).

history

The Ocean Shearer in Fremantle

With the ships of the Ming Sun class, the Yang Ming Line, which was founded in 1972 and previously only operated its liner services with general cargo and semi-container ships, built up its own fleet of full container ships and expanded its route network with them. Except for a few chartered ships, the ships remained in the service of their original clients until they were scrapped in 2008/09. The only exception was the Ming Universe - it was sold in 2002 and converted into the Rodolfo Mata on behalf of the Lebanese Fares Group , the largest animal transporter in the world at the time with a transport capacity of 135,000 sheep . The ship stayed in service until 2012 before it was also canceled.

description

The superstructure of the ship was about four fifths of the length aft . The six holds were arranged in front of the deckhouse, equipped with cell guides and closed by pontoon hatch covers. The container capacity was initially 1608  TEU , later the capacity was increased to 1984 TEU. Initially 102 and later 140 conventional refrigerated containers could be supplied.

The ships received Sulzer main engines of the type 9RND90M with an output of 21,351 kW, which was built under license by Ishikawajima Harima in the Japanese city of Aioi . The single-acting nine-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine acted directly on a fixed propeller and helped the ships to reach a speed of 21.5  knots . Two generators with 900 kW and two generators with 560 kW were installed to supply energy.
