Miomantis binotata , also called colorful dwarf mantis , is a fishing insect from the family of the Mantidae , subfamily Miomantinae .

features

Miomantis binotata grows to around 30 to 40 mm. Females and males are not different in size, as is the case with many other species of fishing horror. The wings are patterned in the females, although this pattern can only be seen after the adult moult . The wings of the males are uniformly green. Before adult molt, even in earlier larval stages, the fishing insect has red spots on its abdomen .

distribution

Miomantis binotata is native to East Africa in the states of Kenya , Malawi , Rwanda , Burundi and Tanzania , but was also found in West African Togo .

Miomantis binotata lives in drier areas, but despite its color, it can camouflage itself excellently on bushes, grasses and scrub.

Special

The males of the mantids are very good and agile fliers. The females of this species, like many other species, cannot fly. If Miomantis binotata is kept at a suitable temperature, it can molt from the larva to the adult stage within 40 to 42 days.

breed

After hatching until the adult stage, Miomantis binotata has a uniform number of moults in front of it. Breeding is quite easy. Around two weeks after adult moulting, the fishing horrors are sexually mature and can easily be put together for mating. You should make sure that the female is well fed or is eating when the male is flying over her. In order to mate the two, you should offer a large terrarium (dimensions approx. 50 × 30 × 30 cm) with plenty of hiding places so that the male can flee after mating.

If the male has thundered the female, it makes careful advances until it suddenly jumps on the female and clings to it. The copulation takes 3-6 hours to complete. A so-called sperm package is inserted from the female's abdomen into the female's abdomen. If the male jumps off her, copulation is over. As a rule, the shell of the sperm package is excreted, but sometimes the entire sperm package is excreted. Normally you only have to mate a female once, as it does not use up the sperm package directly, but only takes parts of it.

Miomantis binotata usually lays up to 15 oothecs in their life. The discard interval is sometimes from 4 days to a week or longer. The larvae hatch after about two to three weeks (provided the temperature is sufficient). Approx. 20–30 larvae hatch from one ootheca. However, it can be more or less depending on the size of the ootheca. The ootheca is about 0.5–1 cm in size and about 3 mm in diameter.
