Ermanno Giglio-Tos (born August 25, 1865 in Chiaverano , Province of Turin , † August 18, 1926 in Turin ) was an Italian zoologist and professor at the University of Turin .

Life

Giglio-Tos studied from 1886 to 1896 in Turin with Michele Lessona , where he mainly learned systematic zoology . In 1902 he was appointed professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at the University of Cagliari , where he founded the Instituto di Biologia Marina in San Bartolomeo, but its realization took decades. He then moved to the University of Florence as a professor of zoology and anatomy of vertebrates , where he stayed for two years, before filling the chair in anatomy and physiology at the University of Turin . He then returned to Cagliari for seven years and in December 1925 again accepted a professorship for zoology in Turin.

Giglio-Tos' research included vertebrate anatomy, hematology , cell biology and developmental biology . In addition, he consistently dealt with systematic work, especially on two-winged species (Diptera), concentrating first on European and African, later on Central American species. He also worked on jumping terrors (Orthoptera), beetles (Coleoptera) and Schnabelkerfe (Hemiptera). All type specimens of the species he describes are stored in the Turin Zoological Museum.

In addition to his specialist publications, he also wrote textbooks for biology classes in high schools and identification manuals for birds and butterflies for beginners and laypeople. Some of his engineering studies have been published in German.
