action

Tokyo 1983. A young man named Rico flees the police with his VW Beetle . A storm is brewing in the streets of the city. Suddenly Rico loses control of his car, races through a roadblock and falls down a slope. Completely unexpectedly, he is hit by a typhoon along with his car and his cat Miyah and transported to Tokyo 2050 by means of a time jump.

This is where the real story begins. Rico shows up with his VW Beetle in Tokyo 2050 and crashes into Claude's police car. This is very upset and arrests Rico on the spot. But a short time later, our young "perpetrator" is helped to escape by Neocrime , a criminal syndicate . As it turned out later, they themselves are very interested in Rico. Claude, who doesn't give up so easily, stays close on Rico's heels and finally catches him again. And so that he doesn't get away from him again, he handcuffs Rico . But Neocrime is on their trail, and so the only thing left for them to do is to flee together. In a church where they seek protection, they meet the young nun Sophia . She joins them after their rehabilitation program fails. Dr. Gondo finally finds the three and takes them into the mobile special task force . Your first job is to smash Neocrime.

Later in the series, the secrets gradually unfold. So one learns that the Generalissimo 1983 was a young, ambitious researcher who had the goal of bringing mankind under his control with innovative weapons technology. While fleeing from secret agents, Rico, who happened to be present, saved his life with a blood transfusion from which both men left scars on their chests. Fuller sees Rico as his brother with whom he wants to share his future power. In a fight with agents, however, the super weapon is destroyed, the explosion of which causes a time storm. Rico flees and gets into the eye of the storm with the beetle, which spits him out in 2050 and erases his memories in the process.

Reception and analysis

Rock'n'Cop reveals a particular aesthetic of the 1980s more clearly than other contemporary anime. It is played with neon tube optics and bright color effects. Entire shots are often bathed in a light red or dark blue light, which emphasizes the artificiality. Ludwig's attributes, the wine and the rose, are light red and dark blue and underline his affectation. In various episodes (e.g. episode 13) you can see sequences that appear like a music video and are accompanied by sung titles in the original soundtrack.

Due to the adaptation of the Saban company, Rock'n Cop was broadcast in Europe with completely newly composed background music, which was common practice in the USA in the 90s, but extremely unusual in Europe (although the latter may have a financial as well as cultural background). The newly recorded music in the style of the 90s tends to be more electronic, more action-heavy and in places a bit more serious than the Japanese soundtrack.
