Mirko Božić

Mirko Božić (born September 21, 1919 in Sinj ; † August 1, 1995 in Zagreb ) was a Croatian writer .

Life

Mirko Božić attended elementary school and high school in his hometown Sinj. 1938–1941 he studied law at the University of Belgrade . He got his diploma in Zagreb. After contacts with the partisans that go back to 1941, he joined them in 1943. After the Second World War, he initially devoted himself mainly to the theater. 1946–1947 he directed the Pionir Theater in Split and at the same time worked as an opera singer at the national theater there. 1947–1948 he ran the business of the National Theater in Rijeka . 1952–1954 he was head of the drama department at the National Theater in Zagreb . From 1955 Mirko Božić worked full-time as a writer and journalist. In the years 1958-1965 he was an editor for various magazines, such as Kulturni radnik , Literatura , Književnik and Telegram . 1965–1969 he headed the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb and was also politically active from 1967–1971 as chairman of the committee for culture and education of the Croatian Sabor (parliament). 1971–1974 he was Vice President of the SABOR and 1974–1978 member of the Presidium of the Socialist Republic of Croatia. In 1975 he finally became a full member of the Yugoslav Academy ( JAZU ).

Works

Božić was just as gifted a playwright as a prose writer in the post-war period. He also wrote scripts and radio plays . There are only a few translations into German.
