Mirna Funk

Mirna Funk (* 1981 in East Berlin ) is a German writer and journalist.

Live and act

Funk was born in East Berlin to a Jewish father and a non-Jewish mother. After her parents divorced, her father left the GDR a year before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Funk worked for various companies and communication agencies. In 2011 she wrote her first, unpublished novel. She studied philosophy and history at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Her grandmother was Andrée-Thérèse Leder , the first daughter (from her marriage to Juliette Leder, née Brandler) of the German writer and translator Stephan Hermlin . Funk lives as a single mother with one daughter in Berlin and Tel Aviv.

Funk works as a freelance author and journalist for, among others, Die Zeit , Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung and Emotion . She has been a Vogue columnist since September 2018, writing about Jewish life today. In 2015, S. Fischer Verlag published her much-discussed debut novel Winter Nahe , which was awarded the Uwe Johnson Prize . The work was also nominated for the aspekte literature award 2015 and the Ulla Hahn author award and reached number 5 on the Radio Eins book list in October 2015 . The filmmaker and journalist Uri Schneider became aware of Mirna Funk through the ZEIT portrait We Living Jews . For his documentary Jude. German. A problem? he accompanied her in Berlin and Tel Aviv.

Malakoff Kowalski composed the music for her radio play On a Single Sheet of Paper (2018, Bayerischer Rundfunk) . Funk and Kowalski wrote the title track Upside down together .
