The Miroslav Gospel

The Miroslav Gospels ( Serbian Мирослављево Јеванђеље Miroslavljevo Jevanđelje ) is a manuscript in Church Slavonic from the second half of the 12th century. It is one of the oldest surviving illustrated texts in Cyrillic script . It contains 362 sheets of parchment with the text of the four Gospels of the New Testament . The style and iconography of the manuscript is a mixture of Italian and Byzantine influences.

The Miroslav Gospel was written by order of the Serbian Župan Miroslav von Zahumlje , Stefan Nemanja's brother around 1086, probably in Kotor . It was intended for the Church of St. Peter (UNESCO World Heritage Site) on the Lim in Bijelo Polje , a Miroslav foundation.

To protect against Ottoman raids, the manuscript was kept in Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos . In 1896, on the occasion of a visit by the Serbian King Alexander I. Obrenović, it was brought to Belgrade , where it was added to the collection of the Serbian National Museum .

Since 2005 it is on the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage .
