Miroslav Kraljević (born December 14, 1885 in Gospić , Lika , † April 16, 1913 in Zagreb ) was a Croatian painter , graphic artist and sculptor . He is considered to be one of the co-founders of modern art in Croatia.

Life

Miroslav Kraljević was born on December 14, 1885 in Gospić . He spent his early childhood up to 7th grade from 1888 to 1902, but he graduated from high school in Gospić in 1904. Kraljević then left Croatia in 1904 and traveled to Vienna, where, in addition to studying law, he took private painting lessons from George Fischhof . Two years later he dropped out of law school and from then on devoted himself to painting. After seven months in Munich, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and became a student of Hugo von Habermann .

After completing his studies in Munich, Kraljević returned to his family, who had moved to Požega at the time . Here he spent the years 1910 and 1911 and during this time he painted the self-portrait with a dog (Croatian: Autoportret sa psom ) and many of his famous portraits, landscape paintings and other works. Here he also became interested in working with sculpture, which he made with clay, plaster and bronze.

In the autumn of 1912 Kraljević went to Zagreb, where he organized his first solo exhibition, which had a retrospective character. He rented a studio and continued to paint until December 1913. In December 1913 he had to go to the sanatorium in Berstovca for treatment . After two months he left the sanatorium and returned to Zagreb, but on April 16, 1913, he fell ill with tuberculosis . Two days later he died at the age of just 27. He was buried in the family grave in Požega .
