The Mirror is a standard boat class that originated in England in the 1960s , of which a total of more than 70,000 copies were built.
history
The Mirror was designed in 1962 on an initiative of the Daily Mirror newspaper by the boat designer Jack Holt and the TV presenter and Do-It-Youself enthusiast Barry Bucknell as an inexpensive "people's boat" that is equally suitable for sailing, rowing and small outboard motors . It should also be transportable on a car roof. In 1989 the Mirror was given the status of a one- size-fits-all class recognized by the ISAF .
design
The dinghy , designed as a do-it-yourself kit made of plywood , has long been offered with a GRP hull. Instead of the wooden gaff rigging (which fits completely into the hull during transport), the popular Bermuda rig has been allowed to be used since 2006, and aluminum alloys have also been allowed as material for the mast and boom.
The development of the Mirror was based on the requirement that even laypeople without practical experience in boat building and with simple tools can build the sailing dinghy. The fuselage is manufactured using the so-called stitch and glue process; the blunt bow section is intended to avoid the technically demanding elaboration of a curved bow tip. The use of a plug-in sword instead of a folding sword also follows the principle of a simple construction. The result is a sturdy, versatile and relatively light boat that can be maintained and repaired with reasonable effort.
