The Schlammpeitzger or Schlammbeißer ( Misgurnus ) are a genus of Loaches (Cobitidae). Regionally they are also called fart gobies or thunderstorm farters because they swallow air and release it through the anus when threatened. The bottom fish have an elongated, 20 to 30 centimeter long, round in cross section, covered with small round scales body and a rounded caudal fin . The lower jaw has three pairs of barbels on the upper and two pairs on the lower jaw. They live in Europe and Asia in stagnant waters and on the banks of larger rivers. They prefer heavily overgrown areas with a muddy bottom. Mud whipers are also intestinal breathers and can swallow atmospheric air. Therefore, they can survive in waters threatened by prolonged periods of heat or drought. The larvae of the mud whip with their outer gills resemble the larvae of the tailed amphibian . The current stock is seriously endangered by the draining of river marshes , swamps and moors . In the course of stocking actions, some Asian mud whippers were introduced into German waters.
