Misha Mullov-Abbado (* around 1990 ) is an Italian jazz musician ( double bass , composition ).

Mullov-Abbado, whose parents are the conductor Claudio Abbado and the violinist Viktoria Mullova , was musically encouraged by his mother, with whom he grew up, but also by his father. He started playing the piano at the age of five ; At school he first learned the horn at the age of seven and then switched to bass at the age of 20. From the age of twelve he composed. After studying at Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge, he studied jazz at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Jasper Høiby , Tom Herbert and Jeremy Brown.

During his senior year, Mullov-Abado founded his own band in Great Britain, with which he released the album New Ansonia on Edition Records in 2015 . Furthermore, he was traveling in a duo with his mother, but also with the folk singer Sam Lee. He also worked with musicians such as Stan Sulzmann , Nessi Gomes and Liam Dunachie. In Italy he also appears with the group Zirobop , with whom he has recorded two albums. He can also be heard on albums by Julia Gelpke, Cosmo Sheldrake, Nick Barbachano, Ayla Schafer and Peter Jones.

Mullov-Abado's compositional style is influenced by various currents of jazz, but also by classical traditions and pop music . He also composed and arranged for other jazz ensembles and musicians of various genres such as Viktoria Mullova, Thomas Larcher and the London Schools Symphony Orchestra .

Prizes and awards

Mullov-Abado won the Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize with his band in 2014 . The following year he received the Darkworth Prize 2015 for his jazz composition Misha and the Peter Whittingham Award with the Patchwork Jazz Orchestra . In 2017 he was named BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist .
