history

1800s: beginnings and first success

With the arrival of the French missionaries in 1838, the wine culture began to grow in the area around Hawke's Bay, New Zealand . In 1851 the settlers built the Mission Estate and, after extensive cultivation of grapevines, opened the winery under the name Mission Estate Winery. From 1870, the owners of the business successfully sold mostly dry red wines . In 1880 the facility was expanded to include a two-story warehouse. The winery was damaged by the flood in 1897, but it was quickly renovated. From this year the lawn or terrace area of over 800 hectares was no longer used as a wine-growing area, but as a recreation area for the Mission Estate. The company also holds concerts there today.

1900s: Reputation and recognition

In 1909 the head of the house, Father Smythe, decided to expand the estate. The institution continued to enjoy international success until 1935. With a record profit in 1935, Mission Estate Winery decided to share their cultivation skills and experiences. Since that date, there have been training courses for students, for example, and guided tours on the premises and the main buildings. The winery still enjoys a good reputation around the world. The facility has been managed by Peter Holley since 1996 and controlled by Paul Mooney since the 1960s. Despite the great demand, the winery is still the size of a family business. Today the Mission Estate Winery is best known for the annual Mission Concert and other major events.

2000s: concerts and operations

Every year the Mission Concert takes place on the open area of the winery. On January 27, 2007, the British world star Eric Clapton performed on the premises of the winery. The gig was announced on June 20, 2006 and sold out within a few days. The concert took place as part of the Doyle & Derek World Tour . The Brit could not satisfy his fans that evening because of his bad mood.
