Mistaken Identity ( dt. "Mistaken identity") is the debut album of American musician Vernon Reid from 1996.

History of origin

After Living Color broke up in 1995, Reid initially worked on several projects. In 1996 he decided to record a solo album. He was assisted in production by Prince Paul and Teo Macero . Mistaken Identity is his first solo album, but he had already recorded an album ( Smash & Scatteration ) outside of a band context with Bill Frisell in 1984 - years before the first Living Color album was released.

Music genre

Reid mixes numerous styles on Mistaken Identity such as rap , rock , turntablism , jazz and others. Therefore, the album, which features numerous guest musicians such as the jazz clarinetist Don Byron , the cornetist Graham Haynes , DJ Logic and others and offers a multitude of instruments, is difficult to classify. Reid's typical guitar playing is also not found on all of the pieces, as some are short radio plays with music. For example, on “Important Safety Instructions (Mutation 2)” with an Indian accent , the actor Laurence Fishburne reads out safety instructions from an instruction manual for a device that remains unclear because the device type is exchanged in the text with the word karma ; he is accompanied by a tabla and sitar . On "Call Waiting to exhale (Mutation 3)", a man on the phone tries to make alternating appointments with his two friends at the same time, when they suddenly hear each other and then talk, whereupon the speaker (with a question mark in the credits) calls out Having seizure and desperately looking for tranquilizers. On the album's hidden track , Reid can be heard on a fictional comedy show called “Who invited You?”. The piece "Saint Cobain" is dedicated to the late singer Kurt Cobain of the band Nirvana . All the tracks on the album were written either in whole or in part by Reid.

success

In commercial terms, he could not follow the previous successes with Living Color with the album, it did not reach a position in the Billboard charts . Despite this failure, Reid remained true to his concept of mixing different styles on one album in the future, for example, he formed the duo Yohimbe Brothers with one of the guest musicians on the album, DJ Logic , which also operate across borders.
