Mistress of the Dead is a funeral doom band founded in 2004 .

history

The funeral doom project Mistress of the Dead has been active as a one-man band by the Czech Vlad Cristea Vales since 2004. The musician founded the project, according to his own statements, exclusively for his own "pleasure" and his own "spiritual development" without "higher goals". This concern and the associated refusal to promote the music or the project was occasionally judged to be a mystification of the project.

“The Czech musician Vlad Cristea Vales, who is behind MISTRESS OF THE DEAD, is still anxious to mystify this solo project. On the one hand, the guy is still keeping a secret about himself and his company, on the other hand, he doesn't even seem interested in making MISTRESS OPF THE DEAD [sic!] Known in any way. "

- Walter Scheurer for Powermetal.de on the album White Roses, White Coffin

Since 2004 the project Mistress of the Dead has released a series of albums, demos and split releases in cooperation with independent labels such as GS Productions , Bubonic Doom , Epidemie Records and Ruin Productions . Between 2008 and 2011 there were no publications due to a serious illness. There were again no publications between 2011 and 2018. In 2018, in addition to another album, an EP, a compilation and a retrospective box set limited to 100 copies with a volume of 15 CDs were released via GS Productions.

Despite the refusal to promote the music and the project, publications such as White Roses, White Coffin from 2007 received widespread attention and received positive reviews internationally. The album was rated by critics as an outstanding release and a future classic of the genre.

style

The music played by Mistress of the Dead is assigned to the Funeral Doom. The webzine Doom-Metal.com describes the music as "characterized by long, cold, ultra-slow and brutal arrangements with crying guitars, slow growls and distant, sad vocals and keyboards." So the music is "relentless and tragic" , meanwhile, the content of the project deals with topics such as “loss and death, severe misery and suicide”. Genre representatives such as Until Death Overtakes Me and Worship are cited as comparative figures .
