Quercus is a funeral doom band founded in 2001 .

history

Lukáš Kudrna and Ondřej Klášterka founded Quercus in 2001 in Pilsen, Czech Republic, as a side project to the post-black metal project Umbrtka . In the first active years of the band, two demos , an EP and two split albums were released . The first releases, the demo recordings as well as the split albums with The River and Oktor as well as with Mistress of the Dead and the EP Nenia , which was released via Foreshadow Music and GS Productions , were rarely reviewed, but if considered they were positively discussed. So lifted Kostas Panagiotou of pantheist in his meetings both demos and EP for Doom-Metal.com out the atmospheric quality of the group.

With their first album Postvorta , released in 2007 via Deserted Factory , the group became known among critics and thus among fans of the genre as an avant-garde funeral doom band. After the publication of Postvorta , seven years passed until the release of the second studio album Sfumato via Moscow Funeral League Records in 2014. Sfumato received international praise.

The publisher of the album Heart with Bread , which followed in 2016 , was again taken over by Moscow Funeral League Records, albeit in cooperation with the internationally renowned death and funeral doom label Solitude Productions . For the first time, a professional organist joined the recordings as a guest musician. Again the album received international feedback, but this time there were reviews for the first time that Heart with Bread was rated as a rather mediocre release, while other reviewers rated the album as highly rated as its predecessors.

After Quercus released the group's early material without post-production as a compilation Kverulant & Nenia via GS Productions, the next new studio album was released in 2019 with Verferum ready. Quercus made his first appearance as a trio with the organist Marek Pišl. The album, which was released again via Moscow Funeral League Records, received positive international reviews, but was less praised than previous releases.

style

The music played by Quercus is attributed to Funeral Doom. Reviewers describe the style on display as independent and avant-garde . For comparison, performers such as Until Death Overtakes Me , Worship , Unholy and Bethlehem are used .

The dominant use of the organ as a lead instrument is emphasized as a special feature . The arrangement remains consistently slow but is considered innovative and complex. The singing is mainly growled gutturally , but the singing is also emphasized as variable. The guitar playing is characterized by the alternation between filigree played chord progressions and heavy and deep riffing .
