Mita Nag

Mita Nag , [মিতা নাগ] (born January 2, 1969) is an Indian sitar player of the Bengali Bishnupur Gharana .

Family and education

Mita Nag is the daughter of the sitarist Pandit Manilal Nag (* 1939) and granddaughter of Sangeet Acharya Gokul Nag; she plays her instrument in the sixth generation. At the age of four she started playing the sitar, two years later under the guidance of her father. She has appeared in public since 1979. Mita Nag has a Masters degree in English Literature and a Master of Philosophy in English from the University of Calcutta .

Musical career

As a solo musician, Mita Nag appears at music festivals in India and abroad, including the 1997 Swarna Samaroha Festival of the Sangeet Natak Academi on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of India's independence, as well as events of the Dover Lane Music Conference (2002 for the 50th anniversary, 2011 for the 150th birthday of Rabindranath Tagore , and 2013), the Salt Lake Music Festival , the World Music Institute in New York (2006) and the Darbar Festival in London (2015). Mita Nag founded the Gokul Nag Memorial Foundation in Calcutta in 2002 in memory of her grandfather to preserve and promote Hindustan music .
