The Mitchell Cove (in Chile Caleta Nylon ) is a bay of Robert Iceland in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is separated by the Punta Aconcagua from the Coppermine Cove , about 2.5 km to the east . Its banks are determined by glaciers and ice cliffs.
The American navigator Benjamin Pendleton (1797–?) Named the bay previously known to seal hunters as Cossets Harbor on December 18, 1821 . British Discovery Investigations scientists conducted surveys between 1934 and 1935. Aerial photographs were taken between 1956 and 1957 during the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee decided on August 31, 1962 to rename. The new namesake is the ship's owner James Mitchell from London , owner of the sloop Beaufoy of London , one of the ships of the second Antarctic expedition (1821-1822) of the British navigator James Weddell . The bay was given its alternative name by scientists from the 2nd Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1947–1948).
