Mitrofan Borisovich Grekov ( Russian Митрофан Борисович Греков * 3 / 15. June 1882 in Scharpajewka, now Rostov Oblast ; †  27. November 1934 in Stavropol , actually (until 1911) Митрофан Павлович Мартыщенко, Mitrofan Pavlovich Martyschtschenko) was a Russian painter . He is considered the father of the Soviet battle painting tradition.

During the Russian Civil War Grekov served in the Red Cavalry , his history paintings based on memories of this time were very much appreciated in the young USSR, the staging of his own experiences was to become a model for the tradition of Soviet battle painting.

The oldest existing Ukrainian painting institute in Odessa is named after Grekov because he was a student of the institute.
