Mittelplate (mudflat area)

The Mittelplate is a large mudflat area in the North Sea off the Dithmarsch coast in the southern part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park . It lies north of the Elbe estuary and largely between Friedrichskoog and the island of Trischen and is bordered in the north by the Meldorfer Bay . In the Mittelplate area there are various sandbanks that can be easily seen from the dike at low tide, as well as a few high sands . Mittelplate is also the namesake for the Mittelplate oil field . The Mittelplate stretches around twelve kilometers from the coast to the North Sea.
