Mittelstrasse 18 (Düsseldorf)
The commercial building at Mittelstrasse 18 in Düsseldorf - Altstadt was built in 1883 by the architects Boldt & Frings for the company Coppel & Goldschmidt. It is an example of the transition from residential to department store and is therefore "to be seen as a development stage to department store [...]".
description
The three-storey building had a main hall that extended through several storeys and was surrounded on all sides by operating rooms. Daylight fell into the hall through a skylight. The facade was in the neo-renaissance style. Pilasters , window casings and canopies , half- columns , cornices all showed “generally German Renaissance forms ”. The " modern " shop window system on the ground floor was installed in 1902 by PP Fuchs.
