Moe Bandy
Moe Bandy (born February 12, 1944 in Meridian , Mississippi ; born Marion Bandy ) is an American country singer who was particularly successful in the late 1970s.
childhood
Moe Bandy was born in Meridian, Mississippi , like Jimmie Rodgers , one of the earliest stars of country music . Rodgers had worked for a railroad company with Bandy's grandfather, and they heard Bandy's records and Hank Williams' records in the house . When Bandy was six years old, the family moved to San Antonio, Texas .
Career start
Bandy had learned to play guitar from his father, but initially he spent his time competing in rodeo competitions across the state of Texas rather than making music. He only performed now and then with his father's band, the Mission City Playboys . After finishing school in 1962, Bandy turned his attention to music and formed his first band, which he named Moe and the Mavericks .
Although the band performed in many clubs and honky tonks in the greater San Antonio area, Bandy continued to earn money as a metalworker for many years. In 1964 he received a record deal from Satin Records for a single record. The song Lonely Lady , written by Bandy and released by the record company, received no attention. In the following years he continued to play in smaller clubs and gave his band regular appearances as a background band on the local local broadcaster as part of the Country Corner program .
breakthrough
In 1972 Bandy met record producer Ray Baker, who with him published the record I Just Started Hatin 'Cheatin' Songs Today in 1973 with an edition of 500 copies. The new record attracted attention, the Atlanta record label GRC acquired the rights and marketed the song nationwide, which was in the top 20 in March 1974. GCR successfully added bandy singles such as It Was So Easy to Find an Unhappy Woman and Don't Anyone Make Love at Home Anymore . In 1975, Bandy made it to number 7 on the charts with one of his most famous songs today, Bandy the Rodeo Clown , written by Lefty Frizzell and Whitey Shafer .
In 1975 Bandy moved to Columbia Records , Ray Baker continued to be its producer. Bandy's first Columbia release, Hank Williams You Wrote My Life , written by Paul Craft, immediately hit number 3 and was named Top New Male Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music (ACM) in 1976 .
Career highlights
In the next few years Bandy was regularly represented with his records in the charts, for example with Here I Am Drunk Again , I'm Sorry for You, My Friend , Cowboys Ain't Supposed to Cry , That's What Makes the Jukebox Play and also as Duet with Janie Fricke with It's a Cheating Situation , which was named "Song of the Year" by the ACM in 1979.
In 1979 Bandy also had his first No. 1 hit as a solo artist: I Cheated Me Right Out of You . In the same year he went on a European tour with Joe Stampley , the joint single Just Good Ol 'Boys also reached number 1 in the charts and was the beginning of a longstanding successful collaboration between the two artists with hits such as Holding The Bag , Tell Ole I Ain't Here and Hey Joe (Hey Moe) . The two were named "Duo of the Year" in 1979 by both the CMA and ACM.
In the 1980s, Bandy continued to perform solo and in duets with Judy Bailey ( Following The Feeling ) and Becky Hobbs ( Let's Get ) with songs like Yesterday Once More , Rodeo Romeo , She's Not Really Cheatin ' and Till I'm Too Old to Die Young Over Them Together ) successful. In 1984 Stampley and Bandy had great success with Where's the Dress , a parody of Boy George , who sued them for copyright payments for using the intro from the Culture Club song Karma Chameleon . The video for Bandys and Stampleys song won several awards.
1986 Bandy changed the record provider again and went to MCA ; his new producer was Jerry Kennedy . With these changes, Bandy also changed his music style and became more pop-oriented. In 1987 he landed two top 10 hits with Till I'm Too Old to Die Young and again in 1988 with Americana , the latter being chosen by George HW Bush as an election song. Bandy supported Bush sr. in the election campaign and played on January 20, 1989 when he was inaugurated as president.
present
In 1991, Bandy opened the Americana Theater in Branson , Mississippi, where he still performs eight months a year. In July 2006, Bandy released his last album to date.
Moe Bandy is single and lives in the country with his dog Lucy.
