Mohamed Abdelaal

Mohamed Ali Abdelaal ( Arabic محمد عبد العال, DMG Muḥammad ʿAbd al-ʿĀl ; * July 23, 1990 ) is an Egyptian judoka . He won the African Games in 2015 and the African Championships from 2016 to 2019.

Athletic career

The 1.75 m tall Mohamed Abdelaal fights in the light middleweight division, the weight class up to 81 kilograms. In 2009 he finished seventh at the U20 World Championships. In 2011 he finished fifth at the African Championships in Dakar after losing to the Algerian Abderahmane Benamadi in the semi-finals . Two years later at the African Championships in Maputo in 2013 he was defeated by the Moroccan Safouane Attaf in the round of 16 , and with three wins in the round of hope, Abdelaal won a bronze medal. In 2014 at the African Championships in Port Louis , Abdelaal lost to Attaf in the semi-finals and ultimately came in fifth. In 2015 at the African Championships in Libreville, he lost to the Tunisian Abdelaziz Ben Ammar in the semi-finals , and won the battle for bronze against Paul Kibikai from Gabon. Five months after the African Championships, the 2015 African Games took place in Brazzaville . Abdelaal defeated his compatriot Ali Hazem in the semifinals and won against Paul Kibikai in the final. In April 2016, Abdelaal won the African Championships for the first time in Tunis , beating Algerian Hamza Drid in the semifinals and Ali Hazem in the final. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he defeated the Mongol Otgonbaataryn Uuganbaatar in his first fight , and in the second round he was defeated by the Russian Khassan Chalmursajew .

In 2017 at the African Championships in Antananarivo , Abdelaal won the semifinals against the Senegalese Saliou Ndiaye and in the final against Abdelaziz Ben Ammar. At the 2017 World Championships in Budapest , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Iranian Saeid Mollaei . In 2018 he won again in the semi-finals against Saliou Ndiaye at the African Championships in Tunis , the final he won against the Moroccan Achraf Moutii . Two and a half months later he reached the final of the 2018 Mediterranean Games in Tarragona, but then lost to Abdelaziz Ben Ammar. At the African Championships in Cape Town in 2019 , the two met again in the final and Abdelaal won his fourth title in a row. In August 2019 he defeated the Georgian Luka Maisuradze in the quarter-finals of the World Championships in Tokyo and lost in the semi-finals to the Israeli Sagi Muki . In the battle for a bronze medal, he was defeated by the Canadian Antoine Valois-Fortier .
