Mohamed Askari

Mohamed Askari (born  May 1, 1943 in Luxor , Egypt ) is a musician , ethnomusicologist and music teacher who has been working in Germany since 1970 .

biography

Mohamed Askari came to Germany in 1970 to study clarinet at the Musikhochschule Heidelberg / Mannheim . After two years he switched to the Berlin Music Academy and studied composition. Finally he studied ethnomusicology , Arabic and ethnology at the Free University of Berlin and in Göttingen .

Mohamed Askari is married, has three daughters and lives in Berlin. He is co-founder of Al-Maqam , a magazine for Arabic art and culture.

About twenty years ago Mohamed Askari began to make classical Arabic music known in Germany. At that time with the Palestinian oud player Mustafa Kurd , who made a name for himself through his commitment to the Intifada . Around 1995 Askari founded the Berlin Takht Ensemble, with which he performs classical Arabic music.

As a solo nay player, he has made a name for himself above all with his appearances at the Long Night of Museums in Berlin. But he is also not afraid to play experimental music that is partly cross-cultural, partly cross-religious.

pedagogy

As a music ethnologist, Askari acquired extensive knowledge of the music of the Arabs, which he passed on both scientifically and practically in seminars, colloquia and symposia. He is also active in child and youth work as well as in adult and teacher training.

Publications

As a scientist, he has published articles on topics related to Arabic music, as a musician he has worked on radio and television, has published several CDs and has written film music and made ethnological films.
