Mohamed Ennafaa

Mohamed Ennafaa ( Mohamed Nafaâ ; born August 28, 1917 in Jendouba ; † October 17, 2007 ) was a Tunisian politician . From 1946 to 1981 he was First Secretary of the Tunisian Communist Party .

Life

Ennafaa, son of a farming family, studied Greek and Latin in Algiers and became a teacher. Since his youth he has been committed to the independence of Tunisia. During the Second World War he participated in the Resistance .

In 1943 Ennafaa joined the Tunisian Communist Party (TKP). From 1943 to 1945 he headed the Sfax party organization . In 1946 he became a member of the Central Committee and the Politburo of the Central Committee of the TKP. In 1947 he was editor of the TKP newspaper al-Taliya ("The Avant-garde"). At the third party conference of the TKP in 1948, Ennafaa was elected First Secretary of the Central Committee of the TKP.

As part of the conflict over Tunisia's independence, Ennafaa was arrested on January 18, 1952, along with other leaders of the TKP as well as the Neo-Destur party and the trade unions, and deported to the south of Tunisia. Ennafaa was imprisoned first in the French barracks of Remada , then in the camps of Ben Gardane and Zaarour . In early 1953, Ennafaa went underground by September 1954.

Five years after independence, President Habib Bourguiba banned TKP in 1961. Ennafaa remained first secretary of the TKP during almost the entire period of illegality. Only at the 8th Party Congress of the TKP in February 1981, which was still held underground, was he replaced by Mohamed Harmel . On July 17, 1981, the TKP was approved again. Ennafaa continued his activity within the party and also took part in the internal-party debates that led in April 1993 to transform the party into the Ettajdid movement .

Ennafaa died at the age of 90 and was buried in the Carthage Cemetery - Byrsa .
