Life

After receiving his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tehran , Aref studied at Stanford University from 1975 to 1980 and received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering. His doctoral thesis dealt with the information theory of networks, scientifically known in the terminology as Aref Networks .

Aref was a member of the faculty of the University of Isfahan , from 1994 to 1997 he was Chancellor of the University of Tehran. Aref was Minister of Communications and Technology from 1997 to 2000, and First Vice President of Iran from 2001 to 2005 under President Mohammed Khatami . As one of eight candidates, Aref was approved by the Guardian Council for the 2013 presidential election in Iran on May 21, 2013 . Aref announced on June 11, 2013 that he was withdrawing his candidacy. Aref is running as the top candidate for reformers in the 2016 parliamentary elections.
