The Poppy Basin is a large depression on the edge of the polar plateau in the Antarctic Ross Dependency . It stretches from the western edge of the Quarles Range south over a distance of 160 km and includes the Firnfeldgebiet in the Queen Maud Mountains with one that at the head ends of Bowman Glacier , the Devils Glacier , the Amundsen and Scott Glacier borders .
The Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen and four companions discovered the depression in the course of his successful South Pole expedition (1910-1912) in December 1911. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it after the Norwegian meteorologist Henrik Mohn (1835-1916), who was responsible for the meteorological reports Amundsen's research trip.
