List of grape varieties

Mohrenkönigin refers to an old, red grape variety that is being preserved for the future by the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture in the district of the German Genebank Vines (as a gene pool and for breeding). On a trial basis, red wine is made from it. The Mohrenkönigin grape variety is also being saved from extinction in the Südpfalzweinberg conservation project near Weingarten.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

The grapes are medium to large, the berries large, round and purple in color. The Mohrenkönigin is relatively resistant to berry botrytis , delivers a medium to high yield and matures with the Pinot Noir .

Color and taste of the wine

The wine is light in color, that is, light red, firm, tasty and fragrant (red currants, red peppers). It has good acidity, could be mistaken for a dark rosé and is reminiscent of Trollinger .

Synonym and name similarity

The grape variety Mohrenkönigin is also called sheep grape .

It should not be confused with the Bondola grape variety , which is synonymous with Mohrenkönig , as Bondola is autochthonous in Switzerland.
