Mompha confusella is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe fringed moth family (Momphidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 11 to 13 millimeters. The fore wings are more elongated than in M. divisella . They are about 4.9 to 5.2 times longer than wide and the whitish area at the base of the inner wing edge is heavily speckled with brownish gray scales .

In the males, the cucullus is slender and has a rounded tip. Subapical it is slightly curved. The saccule is shorter than the cucullus. It is wide at the base and tapers abruptly to a sharply outwardly curved tip. The Gnathos is large and almost triangular in shape. The aedeagus has three cornuti of different lengths. The left cornutus is the shortest, it is forked and provided with tiny needles. The middle cornutus is also forked. The right cornutus is slender, has a sharp point, and is the longest. The strongly outwardly curved tip of the sacculus, the large triangular gnathos and the shape of the cornuti are characteristic of the species.

In females, the 8th tergite is slightly wider than long and rounded at the front. At the back there is a V-shaped non- sclerotized area. The vaginal sinus is wide, cup-shaped and wider than the broadest point of the ductus bursae. The confluence of the seminal duct is keyhole-shaped.

Similar species

Mompha confusella can only be distinguished from the similar species Mompha divisella by genital examination .

distribution

The species is native to Central and Southeastern Europe . In the east, the distribution area extends to Transcaucasia . After Fauna Europaea, Mompha confusella occurs in Europe in Austria , Hungary , the Czech Republic , Slovakia , Ukraine and Russia .

biology

The caterpillars develop on shaggy willowherb ( Epilobium hirsutum ) and narrow-leaved willowherb ( Chamaenerion angustifolium ). It is believed that the caterpillars' feeding activity leads to the formation of plant galls .
