Mompha divisella is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe fringed moth family (Momphidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 10 to 13 millimeters. The head is whitish yellow and tinged with a strong light brown. The thorax is light brown. The front wings are dark gray-brown and marbled whitish. A white band, pointing diagonally inwards, is 3/4 of the fore wing length. This band is often narrowed in the middle, there are light brown ribbons on both sides. The inner band is larger and more irregular. Small tufts with slightly protruding brownish scales are located at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 on the inner edge of the wing. The base of the forewing inner edge is ocher, the first half of the forewing inner edge is white. The hind wings shine gray. In the females, the white band is wider and the eighth abdominal segment is gray-brown ventrally .

In the male, the cucullus is slender, slightly curved and has a rounded and slightly broadened tip. The saccule tapers into a long apical process. It is only slightly curved, ends bluntly and extends beyond the cucullus. The anellus lobes are small and club-shaped. The Aedeagus has three cornuti of equal length. The one on the left is strong, hook-shaped, and has tiny needles. The middle one is fork-shaped. The right one is slender, tapering to a point and has a small hook distally .

In females, the eighth tergite is twice as wide as it is long. The posterior section is not sclerotized and is U-shaped. The vaginal sinus is funnel-shaped and as wide or slightly wider as the dilated part of the ductus bursae. The first part of the seminal duct is small and oval and opens into the posterior part of the bursal duct.

Similar species

Similar species are Mompha subdivisella , Mompha bradleyi, and Mompha confusella . The distinguishing features are described in the respective article articles.

distribution

Mompha divisella is native to Europe as far as the south of Scandinavia . In the east the distribution area extends to the Caucasus and Central Asia .

biology

The caterpillars develop on different species of willowherb such as mountain willowherb ( Epilobium montanum ), marsh willowherb ( Epilobium palustre ), lancet willowherb ( Epilobium lanceolatum ) and small-flowered willowherb ( Epilobium parviflorum ). In Finland you can find the caterpillars also originally in North America domestic glandular willow herb ( Epilobium Adenocaulon ). Evidence of Epilobium alpinum and Chamaenerion angustifolium is doubtful and requires confirmation. The caterpillars live in the stem near the leaf base from June to July. As a result of the feeding activity, a plant bile develops on the stem at the base of the petioles . Strong branching often occurs above the plant bile. The caterpillars pupate within the gall in a white cocoon . The moths hatch in August, overwinter, and can be found again in May the following year. On warm winter days, the moths can also be found in December and January.
