description

Vegetative characteristics

The lancet fireweed is a perennial herbaceous plant . Stems and leaves are hairy when pressed down. The relatively small, only a few centimeters long leaves are clearly divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is 4 to 8 millimeters long. The simple leaf blade is lanceolate and completely or only partially toothed. The upper stem leaves are narrower than the leaf in the picture.

Generative characteristics

With a diameter of only 6 to 10 millimeters, the hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical and four-fold. Their color changes from whitish in the young flowers to deep pink in the old flowers. The scar is four columns.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18 or 36.

Occurrence

The distribution area of the lancet fireweed is Western Europe .

In Germany it is only common in the Rhine Valley south of Cologne. In the other areas it is rather rare, in the eastern parts of Germany it is probably extinct.

The lancet willowherb can be found on rocky slopes, on gravel fields or in walls, for example on vineyards. In Central Europe it is a character species of the association Galeopsion segetum, but also occurs in societies of the order Androsacetalia vandellii.
