Mompha bradleyi is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe fringed moth family (Momphidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 9 to 11 millimeters. They are very similar to Mompha divisella and differ in the slightly oily sheen of the forewings and the often rather indistinct markings, especially in the males.

In the males, the cucullus is twice as wide at the base as at the distal end. The saccule tapers distally to a slightly curved sharp tip that does not reach the tip of the cucullus. The aedeagus is provided with three cornuti of different lengths. The left cornutus is the shortest. It is hook-shaped and has tiny needles distally. The right cornutus is the longest, it is slender and curved. The broad base of the cucullus and the shape of the cornuti are characteristic of the species.

In females, the 8th tergite has a convex posterior margin and an indistinct, non- sclerotized area. The vaginal sinus is significantly narrower than the widest section of the bursal duct. The beginning of the seminal duct is large and elongated.

distribution

Mompha bradleyi is native to Western and Central Europe . According to Fauna Europaea, the species occurs in Europe in the following countries: England , France , the Netherlands , Germany , the Czech Republic , Austria , Hungary , Slovakia , Poland , Romania , Belarus .

biology

The caterpillars develop on the shaggy fireweed ( Epilobium hirsutum ). As a result of the feeding activity, a conspicuous, sometimes red-colored, plant bile forms at the top of the plant or, more often, on a flowering side stem . On the main stem, growth is significantly inhibited by the formation of bile, while the plant bile on side shoots has less of an influence. The species forms one generation per year, the moths fly from mid-July, overwinter and can be observed again from late May the following year.
